Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not” lean” on your own understanding, (Proverbs 3:5).
Earlier this week I shared some thoughts about the mysterious ways of God. I made reference to the “will of God” and how we figure it out. I’d like to expand on that theme and suggest that living in the will of God often has little to do with “figuring it out”.
Today’s text is a classic. In some ways it suggests that trying to figure things out is not trusting. When it comes to having some sense we are living according to the will of God, trust trumps intellect almost every time. I’d like to share with you a couple of essential elements that need to be present for us to have confidence we are right where God wants us; i.e. in his will.
DESIRE. I believe the greatest element of staying in God’s will - apart from his sovereignty - is the desire to do his will. If we truly want to do and be all that God wants us to be, he has ways of making sure it happens.
POSITIONING. Staying in a vital daily relationship with Jesus is essential for having confidence you are in God’s will. Actually, staying in a vital relationship with Jesus is the biggest part of what God’s will for our lives is! If we are in fellowship with God, and desire to do his will, he has ways of making sure it happens.
MOVEMENT. I like the expression “do the next indicated thing.” If I desire to do the will of God, and I’m in fellowship with Jesus, and my wife needs help unloading the groceries from the car, guess what? That is probably the will of God for me in that moment. It is the next indicated thing. Many people get paralyzed trying to “figure out” the will of God when they are probably right in the center of it. When you desire to do the will of God. And you are positioned to do so by being in fellowship with Jesus, there is no difference between the “sacred” and the “secular”. The secular becomes the sacred. Changing a diaper becomes as important as preaching a sermon.
TRUST. I once asked a friend who seemed to be extremely productive for the Kingdom if there was any secret to the way he seemed to always be doing the will of God. He said, “Wherever I go, and whatever I do, Jesus Christ manifests himself through me.” This happens to be one of the most humble men I know…and it was true. He trusted that if he desired to do God’s will, and was in fellowship with Jesus, and simply did the next indicated thing, that God had ways of making sure he was in his will, executing his plans, whatever he was doing.
Do you want to do God’s will? Don’t always try to figure it out. That is usually “leaning on your own understanding”. Instead. Make sure you DESIRE to do God’s will. Make sure you are POSITIONED to do God’s will. MOVE out in faith and do the next indicated thing. TRUST that God is working in you and through you. If you do these four things, you can be confident that God has ways of making sure you are in his will!
