Dogs have a special way of communicating to each other

Although we have previously discussed communication between human and dog, maybe you wonder how dogs successfully communicate among each other. Just as children can have their own type of language among themselves, dogs that meet one another connect in a way that we as humans don’t understand. Although they may seem to get their point across with a simple growl or bark, they cannot fully converse without body language. The special staff at your local Rockford area Petsmart or Petco (or one closest to your home) can help you with special tips on how dogs communicate with each other so you know they are getting along well.

You may notice when two dogs meet, they check each other out by sniffing and studying the posture and body language of the other dog. All dogs are different – some are very open and friendly when meeting another dog while others may be timid and shy, expressing that through aggression. No one knows your dog better than you do and when confronting another dog, always be cautious. You may be the one with a friendly pup who loves everyone and every other animal, but that other dog might not be so friendly. You certainly want to avoid any unpleasant confrontations.

If your dog and the other dog or dogs are just sniffing each other out, just let them communicate in their own little way. You may notice them go side-by-side as they judge each other’s posture and possible eye contact. Are both tails wagging excitedly, or is it a slow horizontal wagging of the tail which could be a sign of hesitation and fear?

If either of the dogs appear to be tense, that is a sign that a fight may ensue. The dogs should be separated. When the dogs are communicating you may notice one showing signs of dominance such as putting the paw on the back of the other dog, humping the dog or urinating on it, whereas a submissive dog will rollover like it is giving up or backing away in fear and anxiety. The ideal body language of a dog or dogs that just want to play is when the head appears low while the rump is elevated, of course associated with the tail wagging and excitement. Sometimes the dog will crouch down on its front paws, like my little guy does all the time, since his whole life revolves around playing with any human or dog that will do so.

It is usually apparent when two dogs are communicating well or if one of the dogs is fearful. Obviously, if the dog’s eyes appear to be staring with ears forward and teeth showing, that is not a good sign. On the other hand, if you notice happy eyes, forward or floppy ears, what looks like a smile on the face and a tongue hanging out, the dog is relaxed and expressing that to the other dog it meets. You should also be cautious when introducing dogs that are anxious and shy, showing signs of being bored by yawning, looking away, ears pressed back against the head and possibly panting profusely. You don’t want to encourage any uncomfortable situations for your dog.

We may not understand totally how dogs communicate amongst each other but they do have an inner sense that is a mystery to us. Whether they are communicating with another dog or with their humans, these intelligent creatures definitely know how to get their point across. As you are in tune with your dog’s behavior, you know exactly what your dog is saying in his own little way.
