An especially heinous case of animal cruelty has investigators in Larimer County, Colorado, hard at work. They are searching for whoever—or whatever—savagely mutilated two dogs found on the side of a road outside the town of Berthoud.
CBS Denver reports that the dogs, which were discovered just a few miles apart, were so badly abused that veterinarians couldn’t identify their breed(s).
The first report to authorities came last Wednesday. Police responding to an anonymous tip found a dog on the side of County Road 4. The animal had been skinned and beheaded, and its tail had been removed. The second dog was found Saturday on a nearby road. It had been subject to the same unspeakable pattern of abuse.
Authorities say that the perpetrators could face felony charges, if in fact the crimes were carried out by humans. Necropsies are being performed on the dogs in the hopes of making that determination.
So far, investigators have no leads. Marcie Willms, a spokeswoman for the Humane Society, speculates that the dogs could be among the dozens of reported cases of missing pets that have been made recently. As she told reporters:
We just get so many animals that come into Larimer Humane Society that are stray every year and at this point we don’t even know the specific breed of the animals.
