Dogs For Autism, located in Greenville, needs donations to continue dog training

Dogs For Autism, an upstate South Carolina organization that helps get service dogs to children suffering from autism, needs help with donations. WYFF4 News reported the story May 7.

It costs between $20-25,000 to train one dog to be a service dog to a child with autism. According to program director Julie Nye, the past 14 months have seen a drop in donations.

Dogs For Autism, located in Greenville, South Carolina, has served the area since 1991.

This crisis is at the point now that it threatens whether or not the program can move forward. Julie stated

“At this point, we’re looking at the likelihood of having to release our young dogs. It’s very unfortunate, very heartbreaking."

Some of the dogs may have to be released to other organizations if donations don't pick up soon. Dogs For Autism needs $150,000 to complete the program for the six dogs they currently have being trained. That means six children with autism won't know the companionship of a dog trained to help them.

Their are currently more than 300 local families on the service dog waiting list.
