The Animal Care and Control Team (ACCT) is getting ready to wind up their Bark in the Mew Year: 13 days of 13 adoption specials promotion with a huge weekend adoption event. But today there is still one more free adoption offer on a very special group of animals. All dogs and cats who have been at the shelter 2 weeks or more are free to adopt. This includes dogs and cats of all ages, shapes, sizes and temperaments. There is a dog and/or a cat for every household.
These are perfectly good pets who get repeatedly passed over for no real shortcoming of their own. Sometimes they are overlooked because they are dark in color. Sometimes they miss out because they are scared and don't come out of their shell until they are out of their kennel. Sometimes they are confused and don't know what to expect so they sit very still when people pass. Or, it could be the opposite. Not used to being confined, they bark and whine so someone will come and get them out of that crazy cage and set them free again.
Regardless, just because a dog or cat doesn't stand out in the shelter does not mean they are not going to be an outstanding pet for the right home. Every personality type fits a home or family. So, some of these overlooked pets stay a little longer at the shelter, but they are spared euthanization because someone has seen the good in them and is holding on and hoping for an adopter to see that same light.
Today, those animals are getting some assistance as the spotlight shines on them. All residents who have been at ACCT over 2 weeks are having their adoption fees waived. You can preview just a sampling of them in the slideshow and then go down to the shelter at 111 W.Hunting Park Avenue. Adoption hours are 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. If you already have a dog in the household, please bring them and any kids to make sure you find the perfect match for everyone.
