When starting to write this article the topic was Doggie Dreams. However as the research always goes it took me away from the topic at hand and into a new area on the web address www.doggiedreams.org This is a web site for an animal rescue, which admittedly I know nothing about. However, there is a story on this site, which could be a story on any of the sites for humane societies or for rescues, except it goes to the heart of the matter. Rather than to break our hearts, this story is one which tells us why people volunteer for rescues and why we support them.
This is not a bid for financial help for this one rescue; rather it is bids for any rescue you are interested in helping. My thoughts are simple and perhaps just simple enough to work. Now bear with me here; we as a population seem to discount everything. We take little time to show caring when we can donate money, we show our attention to others by giving gifts and we indulge in video games which show little regard for life and respect of property.
I must wonder after reading the story of Basil Ratbone, how many of us could instead of donating money, would go to the rescue and take older children to volunteer helping with the animals. If we could do this once or twice a week and see the good and bad of life as a stray or rescue; if we could see that lives are so important to others we don’t even know about; if we could see the harm done by a lack of respect for life; if we could see the efforts put into saving a life, would there be a change in the importance placed on a living breathing being.
Certainly animals show us love and respect; we breed contempt, fear and fighting into them. Maybe we could turn this into an experiment in how well we can change the current trend to a movement of respect and empathy to pets and people.
