Dog warden faces cruelty charges after botched puppy euthanasia

Waverly, OH - Typically speaking, puppies being euthanized at a dog pound, while heartbreaking, does not constitute "news".

It does, however, make headlines when the dog warden who performed the euthanasia is facing animal cruelty charges as a result.

According to 10TV.com, Pike County Dog Warden Randy Mustard was charged with eleven counts of animal cruelty on Wednesday for a "euthanasia" that went awry yesterday.

The failed attempt happened on Tuesday and was discovered by a woman who was at the pound searching for her own lost dog.

While the woman was at the facility, she heard whimpering from behind the building. Her search revealed a disturbing discovery - a trash bag full of tiny puppies.

According to the warden, the puppies had been dropped at the facility with their mother while the shelter was closed.

The warden contends that the mother was already dead and the newborn pups - estimated to be just 1-2 weeks of age - were administered shots which were intended to killed them.

Though Warden Mustard contends that he advised the shelter staff not to bag the puppies up until they "went to sleep", he alleges that someone did while he was out on a call.

Warden Mustard was informed that those puppies were still alive when he received a call from the sheriff after the woman's discovery at the dog pound.

Sadly, the infant puppies all perished approximately one hour later.

Warden Mustard has stated that euthanizing a puppy is difficult due to the size of their veins and heart and he maintains that he is innocent of any wrong-doing.

The way that these puppies died is heart-breaking, but an even bigger tragedy is how they arrived to the facility in the first place...dumped with their dead mother.

Rest in peace to all of these precious souls.

Note: The puppy featured in the photo which accompanies this story is not one of the euthanized pups. This is Cole, a puppy available for adoption at the Pike County Dog Pound. Please read Cole's Petfinder profile at this link.
