Crime is growing rampantly in the United States. Sadly some crimes are relevant to pet ownership. These crimes, in many instances, are due to pet flipping.
Not only has the American Kennel Club (AKC) begun recording these statistics, but certain areas are reporting more cases than others; Indianapolis is one state that has been in the news lately. Pet flipping rates between January and May of 2013 have increased nationally by 27.8% over the rates from the prior year.
There are easy cases where pets are stolen from locked cars (some are stolen while their human pumps gasoline), from tie-outs when owners run into a coffee shop (see Katie Couric’s story of how she sometimes does this), and then there are the bold cases where the thieves have reportedly come right into dog owners’ yards and taken their dog right from under their nose.
If you are unaware of what pet flipping is, it is where the flippers or dog-nappers steal canines that are left unattended in a multitude of locations (many of these places should be safe – such as the dog’s own yard). Once the individual has the dog, many times they keep them in horrible conditions while they work through a variety of ways to sell the dog. Many utilize Craigslist, by advertising on other sites online, through print and newspaper ads and other ways. If the owner recognizes their own pet, these sneaky individuals even try to extort the owners by making them pay to get their pet back.
In order to deter these thieves from successfully taking your beloved pooch, Jim Allen, inventor and founder of StayBoy Lock, has some useful tips on how dog lovers can prevent their pet from being dognapped or flipped:
- If your dog becomes lost, help increase your chances of getting your dog back by having them microchipped for identification. Pet flippers, when caught, will profess that they own the dog, and if your dog doesn’t have proper ID, there will be no way to provide evidence that the dog is yours.
- Get references from a variety of sources of the pet sitters you hire. Make sure these individuals can be trusted to care for your beloved pet.
- Never leave your dog unattended without proper safety measures. Simply tying up your dog with a leash creates opportunity for pet flippers and dog-nappers. By utilizing a product like StayBoy Lock in a responsible manner, when out and about with your dog, makes it impossible for your dog to be stolen.
There are many scenarios where StayBoy Lock could prove to be a huge asset, such as when you are camping and need to shower, use the facilities or when you are in the car on vacation and after the dog has relieved itself, it is too hot to be in the car but is not allowed in the facilities. In both of these instances plus a wide variety of other instances, using this product could just save your dog from being stolen and save you from the heartbreak of losing them.
Stayboy Lock was created and invented by Jim Allen, a fellow dog lover who was concerned about the safety of his dog while on a camping trip. StayBoy™ Lock, is a state-of-the-art combination lock for pets, designed to allow them to be safe while in the yard, in the car, while on vacation, in hotel rooms, and just out for a good trip to the park. To get the Stayboy Lock into the hands of dog lovers throughout the country, Mr. Allen recently launched a Kickstarter Campaign (https://www.kickstarter.com/profile/stayboy-lock) to raise needed funds to get StayBoy Lock into full production.
A product like StayBoy Lock may just be the key to keeping your pet dog safe and sound whether at home or away. It is sad that we have to go to such extents, but with thieves willing to even steal living, breathing animals from the sanctity of their own yards, it is necessary. Thanks to Jim Allen, perhaps some of this needless heartache can be diminished. Let’s work together to eliminate pet flipping by checking out Allen’s Kickstarter Campaign.
