FRANKLIN, Indiana — 3 years ago, Mira, a mastiff German shepherd mix should have been dead. After all, her rescuers had “killed” her so why did she refuse to cooperate and just die?
Mira, whose name means miracle, was born to an ill mother who died shortly after giving birth. She was taken to an animal shelter along with her littermates and euthanized. Their bodies were put in barrels in a freezer to be disposed of later.
Four days later, she was found by a shelter worker…ALIVE! The shelter worker was ordered to take the puppy to be euthanized (again) by a veterinarian. The shelter worker instead took the puppy home and gave her a warm bath.
Today, Mira is an ambassador who walks the halls of Johnson County classrooms to talk to children about the bond between people and their pets and about why they should adopt if they want a pet and how they should spay or neuter their pets to reduce the number of unwanted animals facing a fate like Mira did.
After investigating Mira’s case, it was found that she had been given too small a dose of the barbiturate that was intended to kill her. For those who are disgusted at how Mira was treated, you will be happy to know that Rushville reassigned its shelter warden to the town street department as a result.
