An Osprey, Fla., woman was arrested and charged with animal cruelty after she allegedly strangled her own dog, reported Tuesday's My Fox Tampa Bay.

According to officials, a necropsy revealed that a pit bull named "Diamond," died a "prolonged, painful and cruel death," allegedly at the hands of her owner, 28-year-old Shelley Bezanson.

Bezanson is accused of using a leash to strangle the seven-year-old dog; the incident took place this past November.

According to the Herald Tribune, Bezanson was going to be evicted if she did not get rid of the pit bull, so she took her dog to her veterinarian on several occasions to have the dog euthanized, but the vet refused because Diamond was young and healthy.

Though Bezanson was provided with the names of several rescue agencies, she apparently did not want anyone else to own her dog so she decided to end Diamond's life herself.

According to a probable cause affidavit, Bezanson stated:

The vet would not put Diamond down, so I did,"

Bezanson admitted that she turned up music inside of her home to mask the sound when she killed her dog.

On Friday, Bezanson was arrested on a charge of animal cruelty and taken to the Sarasota County Jail.
