Dog starves to death after pet-sitter fails to show up

A dog in Enfield, Conn., suffered a painful demise after the pet-sitter who was entrusted with his care, allegedly failed to feed him, reported Saturday's NBC Connecticut News.

Andrew Zander had appointed Carla Bushnell, a family friend, to pet sit for his dog, "Bandit," while he was out of town caring for his wife, who was hospitalized in Massachusetts.

Though Bushnell claimed that she had been to the apartment daily to check on the dog, a necropsy on Bandit's body revealed that he had absolutely no food in his system; he had starved to death.

Enfield police were alerted to the problem by a postal worker who noticed the mail piling up; a peek through Zander's window revealed Bandit, dead on the floor.

Zander is devastated over the loss of his dog, who he considered to be family.

He told NBC News:

I would have rather seen him pass by old age or hit by a car than to starve to death,

Bushnell was arrested for animal cruelty on Thursday and was out on bond by Friday.
