Dog stabbed during argument between family members

An argument between a mother and son turned violent for the family pet in Ashtabula, OH.

Their pet Dachshund, Daisy, was stabbed several times, and the son, Justin Hommes, is in jail.

"She has four stab wounds to the face and she has five staples holding those together. Her jaw was fractured in several spots and she has trauma to her eye," said Melanie Neff, who now has custody of the dog.

Late in February, the Ashtabula police received a call from Michelle Hommes stating that she was having a problem with her 25 year old son, Justin, and that he had injured her dog.

"We responded to the complaint and found a young male who appeared intoxicated. The mother was complaining that he was causing a real problem and that her dog, Daisy, had been injured. Our belief was that the gentleman was the cause of the injury. He was arrested and charged with animal cruelty," said Ashtabula Police Chief Robert Stell.

"Daisy came in and she had quite a few lacerations to the top of her head. She also had a broken jaw. It appeared the lacerations were made with a sharp object. They were clean and down to the bone," said Dr. Cheryl Beinhardt of the Pleasant Valley Veterinarian Clinic.

Justin Hommes is currently being held in the Ashtabula Jail and has a hearing scheduled for March 13.
