Dog stabbed and left to die learns to fly

Janis Joplin said she was leaving on a jet plane.  This story is about the life that can begin by arriving on a jet plane or more specifically so, a Piper plane.

Not long ago, a beautiful 8 month old Catahuola Leopard Dog found herself laying in an Illinois ditch and near death from being brutally stabbed.  Thankfully, an angel was sent to aid her and she was scooped up and taken to a vet who patched her up.  After her recovery, the sweet dog found herself in a rural Illinois animal shelter and in desperate need of a home.  Somehow, her picture found its way to a Missouri rescue group called Midwest Animal ResQ and it touched the heart of Erin Morse, the organizations director.  Erin made all of the arrangements and Pilots N Paws stepped in and offered the dog a ride to Missouri and she was on her way within a few hours.  And just how did she get from Illinois to Missouri?  First class, aboard a Piper plane.

And that is how she got her name.  Piper arrived in Missouri and once treated, it was discovered that the girl who had already overcome so much was going to have another obstacle to hurdle.  Piper tested heartworm positive and now, she has a very long and painful recovery ahead of her.  To add more insult to injury, the rescue group found out that she is also deaf.

For around $10 a month, heartworm can be prevented by a simple pill that you can purchase from your veterinarian.  There are even numerous organizations that will help low-income families obtain medical treatment and care, at hugely discounted rates.  Check out Heartland SPCA or Spay and Neuter KC for more information.  There are also outreach groups called Unleashed Pet Rescue and Adoption and Chain of Hope, which are all located in the greater Kansas City area.

If you would like to adopt Piper or donate to her care, please contact Midwest Animal ResQ.  You can visit them online at www.midwestanimalresq.org or by calling (310) 350-2053.
