A family in Dover, New Hampshire, is grieving—but not because their home was robbed last Thursday. The burglar or burglars who forced their way into the home took something that was truly irreplaceable. They took the life of the family pet, a pit bull.
Station WMUR reports that the family returned home to find that their house had been burglarized and, more devastatingly, that their dog had been shot in the chest. The pup, described by the family as a “sweetheart,” was still breathing.
Dover Police Department Lt. Brant Dolleman is quoted as saying:
The dog was still alive, and they took it to the vet in an attempt to save its life. Unfortunately, that didn't happen. She died at the vet.
The crime occurred in a home on Dover Point Road between 6 a.m. and 4 p.m. Cash and firearms were among the material items taken.
A crime scene unit called in to process the scene for evidence pieced together a likely scenario of the crime. As Dolleman explains:
All indications is the dog encountered these people or this person in the home just as a person may have, and you don't want anybody to get hurt.
While police continue their search for forensic evidence, they have also issued a plea for the public to become involved. Says Dolleman:
The case is progressing. I'm optimistic, but we certainly could use any help from the public. If anybody happened to see anything, any time during the day down in that area, anything suspicious at all, they can give us a call.
