Dog sentenced to death after biting a child

Contra Costa, CA - It has become an all-too-familiar scenario...chained dog bites wandering child.

This particular situation is no exception to what has become a sad norm.

According to the Mercury News, last week a chained Pit bull bit a 4 yr-old child in the face. That dog is now scheduled to be euthanized.

The incident happened on January 6 - the day that the 4 yr-old little girl spotted a 5 yr-old dog chained in the front yard of a neighborhood home.

The child approached the dog and began to pet him - at some point, the dog bit her on the cheek and nose. The little girl has been treated for her wounds and is expected to make a full recovery.

The chained dog, however, will not recover from the incident. He has been turned over to the Contra Costa Animal Services and the agency plans on euthanizing him as soon as his mandatory quarantine is over.

The same questions always seem to apply in these tragic situations...where were the child's parents?

Why was a 4 yr-old little girl wandering around the neighborhood?

Why is the dog being put to death when he was the one who was in his own yard?

Tragically, the dog bite may have never occurred had the dog not been tethered in the yard. Then again, had someone been supervising the child, it probably would not have happened either.

There are no winners in these situations - only sadness for the many failures.

Most importantly - this bite was not the result of a bad breed. This bite was the result of a bad situation.
