Firefighters say a dog saved the lives of some Daytona Beach residents Thursday morning by warning them when a house on Hartford Avenue caught fire. No one was hurt in the blaze, but the older building style of the 1920s-era home presented challenges to Daytona Beach and Ormond Beach firefighters.
Fire crews found heavy flames and smoke coming from the back of the two-story home on their arrival Thursday morning, according to Daytona Beach Fire Department spokesperson Lt. Larry Stoney. Heavy flames from the interior initially prevented firefighters from entering the home, but crews were able to push back and gain access inside the home. They also cut holes in the roof to let the heavy smoke and flames clear the interior of the house, according to Lt. Stoney.
Fire starts inside wall
Firefighters believe the fire started in a wall of the home close to a power outlet where a freezer was plugged in, and then the fire rapidly moved through the second floor and attic of the home. Lt. Stoney says fire crews saved most of the contents of the first floor of the home, but the second floor was lost. Damage to the home was estimated at around seventy-five thousand dollars.
