Ray Charles, a blind Golden Retriever, took the Today Show Pet of the Year Award (TodayShow.com). He is so beautiful and makes a very good point that just because an animal is disabled does not mean they cannot show love and be a wonderful pet. Every year hundreds of animals are euthanized due to a disability, when they could make someone a wonderful pet.
Just as we are beginning to see the potential of people with disabilities we are also beginning to see the potential for pets as well. Pets bring unconditional love, do extraordinary work and make our lives so much happier and fuller. It is so important to recognize the value of these lives. We use, especially dogs, but other animals to assist us in many areas of our life’s each day. So it only stands to reason that a disabled pet can help us also.
We are a nation of busy, busy people, but we have time for our pets and they have time for us. There are moments in life when it is so wonderful to have a warm loving pet to hold. What we seem to forget is that these moments are frequently pivotal moments in our lives. When we have just been emotionally hurt or perhaps even physically injured, it is so wonderful to have a friend that knows us and we can talk too. Congratulations – Ray Charles for showing the world what really counts.
