Dog-meat festival happening early in one Chinese city to avoid protests

According to Wednesday's publication of the Guardian, in an effort to fly under the radar of animal-rights activists, one city in southern China is holding their annual summer solstice festival early; the festival is marked by the consumption of dog-meat.

Every year, thousands of dogs are slaughtered in Yulin and the meat is served to residents and visitors in the days leading up to, and just after, June 21. This year, in an effort to avoid angry protesters, residents began to celebrate their summer solstice festival early.

According to Business Week, many of the dogs being consumed at the festival were stolen from pet owners and transported via truck to slaughterhouses.

Humane Society International reported that Peter Li, China specialist with Humane Society International, visited the area this week and found the city residents to be "uneasy." The typical restaurant signs which advertise dog-meat were uncharacteristically missing.

Li wrote:

“Local authorities are under tremendous pressure…activists and journalists are converging in Yulin from across the country.”

Dog-meat traders are coming under pressure as support for an end to the annual slaughter continues to grow with each passing year.

The summer solstice festival has long promoted dog meat as a way for individuals to remain healthy during the winter months, but animal-activists have noted that eating the dog meat is not only barbaric, but a serious health risk.
