Dog left to die alone at California shelter

Crying...for the owner that handed over the leash to strangers and left me here alone.

Confused....by the unfamiliar sounds and faces that surround me.

Longing....for the touch of a kind hand on my tired body.

Haunted....by memories of days by my owner's side.

Saddened...by the sounds of fear coming from the other dogs around me.

Begging....for someone to take me away from the fear, confusion and sadness that surrounds me.

Yogi was surrendered to the Carson Shelter on Thursday. His owner told the shelter that Yogi could barely walk as a result of hip dysplasia.

Rather than humanely euthanizing the senior dog - comforting him in his final hours - Yogi's owner abandoned him at a shelter where he will sit alone, on a hard, cement floor, for several days before being euthanized by a stranger.

Yogi will depart this life without the dignity and comfort that his owner owed him. No last special meal, no comforting words from the mouth of his owner...only fear and loneliness.

It never ceases to amaze and sicken me at the awful, uncaring cruelty of some humans. This dog thought he was loved for whatever time he spent with these cretins and in the end was betrayed and left alone hurting and afraid. They just didn't want to spend the money to help him. I have lost two dogs, both rescues, over the last few years and I would have spent my last dollar to help them. When they went to the bridge, I was there with them. They will always be with me. I only hope if and when he goes, that there is someone to comfort him with hugs and a kind word. How sad. Whoever it was who abandoned him at the "shelter" , do not get another dog. You don't deserve one. Shame on you.

  • Kriss R 1 year ago

Sweet boy. If I were not across the country, I would bring you home, show you love, then hold your head in my arms and speak sweetly to you while you cross the bridge. I send you my love and my prayers, sweet one.

  • dru wilson 1 year ago

awww, Yogi...i'm so very sorry that "they" left u like this. i'm praying that a Rescue will come for u n let u b comfortable b4 it's u'r time 2 cross the Bridge.....all "they" had 2 do was take u 2 a vet who would gently send u over.......
isn't there somewhere where this precious boy could spend his last days in dignity n comfort? PLEASE.........

WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH PPL, HOW SAD, AND YES I AGREE, HOW CRUEL TO ABANDON AN OLD DOG, THAT SHOULD BE LIKE A FAMILY MEMBER

  • Mary 1 year ago

I have no words for this piece of !@#$ that left this baby here to die. The furkids are for life for better or for worse. My shepherd lived for 16 years and had hip problems, vision but was loved to the the very end. I am crossposting for him and pray to god someone gets him the hell out of there!!

  • ramonsmom 1 year ago

Such a sad story. And there are so many dogs like Yogi surrendered every day around the country. This is a disposible world. If something gets old, throw it out. This is unlike us dog lovers who are saddened as our dogs get old and we do all we can to help them physically and mentally.Maybe Yogi got more attention at the shelter than he would have with an uncaring owner. This could have been one of those cases of a dog abandoned along a lonely road or left to just lie there starving to death. **RIP dear YOGI**May you be forever happy and loved on the other side of the Rainbow Bridge

  • pambon 1 year ago

I'm speechless with sorrow. Owners like this should should be shot.

  • CRYSTALJACKSON 1 year ago

I just saw this dog on FB in a couple of places including Pet Pardons. Thank you Penny for telling his story too. That sorry excuse for an owner should have his mug shot and contact information posted for everyone to see. I would have done anything to save my dogs who passed, and I did. I can't imagine being so heartless about something who loves you beyond probably any human. I hope that owner knows the suffering he showed this dog soon. Please help him find a home. He may have some good months, or more, left with some meds. I doubt his owner ever did that for him. If he did not bring him to a Vet for this, he did not do anything else for this precious creature.

  • vmaxchic 1 year ago

I agree with everyone posting here. I feel so sorry for Yogi. People like that don't deserve to have a dog. I hope someone can save Yogi and give him a few days or weeks of happiness, love and respect and be there for him, with him, until the very end.

  • Patti M 1 year ago

Sweet boy, you deserved so much better. A truly loving owner would have helped you live your remaining time in dignity and comfort, and when the time came, been with you as you crossed the Rainbow Bridge. His face would have been the last thing you remembered, holding you gently and telling you that you were loved. That is what you deserve, not this. I pray that someone can take you home for whatever time you have, and be with you at the end. God bless you.

With tears in my eyes.....I wish I lived closer to help this poor dog.
Some of these articles are so hard to read.......I wish I could be there to help this dog

  • lisa o 1 year ago

when will people get it? your pets are NOT disposable! They are thinking, feeling, loving sentient beings who deserve to be treated as such.
I long for the day when I no longer have to rescue the poor animals that people throw away like trash.

  • Melissa 1 year ago

This brings tears to my eyes. SHAME on this owner for doing something so heartless!
This poor baby was abandoned when he needs love more then anything. Isn't there anyone who can give him that with the time he has left? If I were in California I would not even hesitate to be there for him. God bless you baby.....

GEEEEEEEEEEEEZZZZ! What is wrong with this owner? How could you have a loyal, sweet dog for all those years and then give them an end like this when all they ever did was love you?????!!!!!!!! I hope this person dies a lonely, long and painful death. Too harsh? I don't care

All I can think of, is the pain of the owner. Probably lost his job in this economy, maybe lost his home to foreclosure, his family fled looking for better times. He didn't leave the dog alone in the empty house to die of starvation as some have done recently. He didn't tie it up in the back yard, abandoned. He cared. He probably cried. And he did the only, responsible thing left to do: He took it to a shelter where he knew it would have a few more days, maybe a rescuer, and a warm hand as it was put to sleep. He couldn't afford any better. Please, until you know more, have compassion for the WHOLE situation. Would you have helped him euthanize his old, beloved, broken-down dog if he had asked? Or would you have turned away?

  • Teresa S 1 year ago

I dont really care if you lost it all at least have the balls to stand next to this amazing dog that has been your campanion for 14 years and set him free. Dont dump in in a shelter for a "Free" euthanasia. I have held 3 dogs till thier last breathe and the last thing they saw and felt was my love. I have no compasion for this person. NONE!

  • CT 1 year ago

Teresa, I'm glad that you have all the money in the world to take care of your dog. Please be aware that there are many people -- especially in this economy -- who aren't so fortunate. Some people are in such awful straits these days they couldn't come up with the $200 or more it would cost to put their dog down. Please!!! Open your eyes, and have some compassion. Maybe you can show it to the next bum you see on the street, especially the homeless fellow with a dog....

  • Wanda 11 months ago

CT I would have helped him get the money to send his beloved dog out with grace

  • Naida 1 year ago

There is a gentleman from Ohio who says he is willing to care for Yogi for his remaining years. I sent him a personal message and ask that he post here. If this is the case, there are two issues: (1) Who is going to get Yogi out of the shelter; and, (2) how to get Yogi from California to Ohio.

  • Michele Rust 1 year ago

Naida, my name is Michele Rust, and I have alot of rescue network friends. Please have your friend contact me on Facebook via msg or at micheleandrich@thehoosiertrail.com. I think we can help him with this. Love to u and thank you!

What a scumbag Yogi's owner was, he's nothing but the lowest of the low.
Sharing on FB in the hope that someone see's it and can help this poor baby, he deserves the right to enjoy comfort and love before he finally crosses the Bridge.

  • Joe 1 year ago

I'm the guy Naida mentioned. I live in Ohio and am willing to give Yogi a home for the rest of his days. But, need help getting him to me. I'm willing to meet anywhere close to Ohio. Any help that can bring this great guy out this way would be greatly appreciated.

  • Jim Graves 1 year ago

Joe send me your EM direct at jamescgraves@comcast.net. If I can help I am willing to chip in on transport to get the dog from the rescue that is going to pull it. If they contact me I will put in direct touch with them since they would be the ones with the dog.

  • Yvonne Boudreaux 1 year ago

    Joe!
PLEASE make sure the shelter knows this!!! Too many animals have been euthanized after a hold had been put on them for rescue. If the pet rescue route of transfer has him going through NM, I will certainly help with transport...

All I can say is these people just make me so sick.If I could get him to get there I would and would love him forever.

  • maxiemom 1 year ago

This is absolutely sick. I agree with every single person here. The jerk that left this poor dog in a shelter to die alone should be hanged. Surely he or she could at the very least find a vet who would put this poor dog to sleep free of charge. My vet does it as part of his service (which I didn't know until my mother had to put her dog to sleep). He feels it's a hard enough decision for someone to make without money being part of it. There must be vets like that out there. I've had to put pets to sleep in the past, and I would NEVER consider doing what this monster did for ANY reason, money or no. How could anyone be so heartless???

  • maxiemom 1 year ago

To follow the above, I wish he were here in Virginia. It might break my heart, but my vet's office where people would give him a kind word and some love and attention are better than this.

  • Maria 1 year ago

WHEN MY ROTTIE HAD CANCER, I HAD NO MONEY TO PTS, I EMAILED FRIENDS, FAMILY, PLEADED ON MYSPACE FOR HELP, A LOCAL RESCUE CALLED MY VET & PAID FOR HIM TO BE PTS, THEN PAID TO HAVE HIM CREMATED. IT WAS THE WORSE DAY OF MY LIFE & 2 YEARS LATER I STILL MOURN HIM, BUT IT WOULD BE WORSE IF I WAS NOT THERE FOR HIM. I HAD NIGHTMARES FOR MONTHS, ENDED UP ON ANIXETY MEDS AFTER PUTTING HIM DOWN, ID DO IT AGAIN IF I HAD TO. THATS THE LEAST I COULD DO FOR MY BABY.RESCUE DID NOT WANT FUNDS BACK, THEY TOLD ME TO USE IT TO HELP ANOTHER , SO I ADOPTED A 3 LEGGED 7 YEAR OLD FROM DEATH ROW. WHO IS THE SWEETEST BOY YOU EVER MET.

  • Naida 1 year ago

As posted above, there is a person who is willing to take Yogi in. Is there anyone out there who can (1) get Yogi out of the shelter and foster; and (2) help get Yogi to Ohio? If not, can you pull out all of your resources and contacts, please? Thank you.

  • Teresa S 1 year ago

How just how could anyone walk away and leave a pet to end their days alone. eyes too full of tears to see to type, and heart full of sorrow. I couldnt leave my pet dog for any reason so faithful and loving.

Do you have Penny's contact information, or a link where we can contact her? Naida

If I didn't lived so far away and had a bigger home and would loved to have you come to my home. I'm so sorry.
Why do people adopted pets then turn around and dumped them because of a certain condition or age or whatever??? That isn't fair to them and they are the ones that suffered. This brings me to tears.

  • Regina D. 1 year ago

Joe, I sure hope you can get the help for his transport. You are a blessing and I hope and pray that he will be able to come to you.

Two of my favorite poems is Growing Old With Dogs and Tray's Poem (google them if you've never read it, have Kleenex). Tray's Poem is about this exact scenario only with a better outcome and Growing Old with Dogs is someone doing it right.

This brings tears to my eyes. sooo heartbreaking. so much abandonment, cruelty, abuse. where is the love these people started out giving to these pets?please God stop this now.

  • Jim Graves 1 year ago

I just talked to the Carson City Shelter. Woman who answered said she was the rescue coordinator. She said their was a dog rescue in California which was going to pull this dog in the next day or two and get it to a foster. However she would not give me the name of the Rescue Organization. I left my contact information with here and asked her to pass to the Rescue so they could contact me and we could figure out something on transportation.

She said their phone was ringing off the hook with people calling about Yogi.

If Joe is willing to take this dog and we can put together a transport fund to be administered by the California rescue perhaps we can give this poor dog a dignified end.

Will advise when the rescue contacts me.

I believe it's Coastal German Shepherd Rescue in Orange Co. Yogi may have been adopted by a private party over the weekend, but I"m not sure.

  • Melissa Erasmus 1 year ago

Joe-you are wonderful to step up and offer this sweetheart a loving home for the time he has left. I am in Connecticut, but am more than willing to help any way I can. If I can help please email me at jme330@gmail.com

  • Ellen 1 year ago

I hope someone checks out "Joe" prior to turning any animal over to him. How do we know he's wonderful? It's wonderful a rescue has pulled him and sent him to foster. Let them check out Joe - I'm sure Joe can contact the shelter and leave his info for the rescue. Geez people, come on, don't you read other articles posted here??? Not everyone's a Jim Dandy.

  • Lauren T 1 year ago

If someone can find out how to get him out of the shelter i am in Irvine CA and i will take him. My vet is a family vet and will evaluate him and if he truly needs to be euthanized i will be with him if he has a few yrs left he can enjoy it from my living room couch.
my email is ltheroux08@yahoo.com if anyone has info for me.
this may be easier than trying to get him to ohio i'm maybe an hr away.
