According to Wednesday's My Fox Phoenix, a dog has been living alone in the backyard of a Mesa, Ariz., home ever since his owner was sent to the hospital in early January.
Neighbors have tossed food into the fenced yard, but after the smell from accumulated feces grew too strong, and sympathy for the neglected dog became overwhelming, they reached out to animal control for assistance. Though an animal control officer left a notice on April 29 for the dog owner to respond to the allegations of animal cruelty an unsanitary conditions, nobody returned to the residence to check on the dog for an additional six days.
The Chow Chow's owner remains in the hospital and she asked someone to care for her dog, but that individual is providing minimal care.
Diane Brady with Mesa Animal Control stated:
You have to understand from the owners perspective; she's in the hospital and cannot do anything to help her dog, so she made accommodations for someone to take care of her dog, and if they're doing that then we cannot remove the dog,
According to residents in the area, that care provider only stops by once every two weeks. Since the animal control agency has declared that the dog cannot be removed for unsanitary conditions, everyone in the area, including the dog, continues to suffer.
