Dog groups come together to advocate lift of pit bull ban

Dog advocates from all over Northeast Ohio are coming together to ask the City of Parma to lift their ban on pit bulls.

Two years ago, the state of Ohio removed pit bulls from their dangerous and vicious dog breed list but local communities aren't forced to to comply.

Parma is one of several cities still prohibiting the breed in Northeast Ohio, along with Lakewood and Garfield Heights. Parma's ordinance states, "the owning, harboring, or keeping of a pit bull within city limits is prohibited."

Members of the Animal Guardians for a Prosperous Parma have attended nearly every city council meeting, stating their case for the city to adopt the state's new view on the breed.

A City of Parma spokesperson, Jeannie Roberts says, "There is nothing in the state of Ohio's law that prohibits this local ordinance from remaining in place. Nothing has happened that has made the administration change its position about this ordinance."

Tonight, Parma is scheduled to have a city safety meeting where advocates are planning to bring a Dayton lobbyist to further their cause.

Parma's three neighboring communities, Seven Hills, Cleveland, and Parma Heights, all allow pit bulls.
