Las Vegas, Nev. - A dog given away for free through Craigslist was found severely emaciated a year later in a wash* by the rescue organization, On My Way Home Dachshund Rescue.** The female Akita was so weak, she could barely lift her head. Minnie - as she was named by her previous owner - is in critical condition and in the fight of her life.
After Minnie was given away by her original owner, she soon went missing. The circumstances surrounding her disappearance are unknown; however, she was still wearing her original rabies tag when the rescue found her. That tag is how her saviors were able to track the owner who, a year earlier, was able to rid himself of the "burden" of pet ownership.
It has become common knowledge that giving away or selling pets by way of any type of classified advertising website, such as Craigslist, is a very bad idea. In fact, most would say it's downright irresponsible given the recent news of animals who - after having been given away or sold through a classified ad site - were killed, fought, used as bait dogs or, worse, suffered prolonged torture before meeting the sweet boon of death. Those who are unaware of the dangers of giving away animals using this type of medium either live under a rock, or simply don't care. Despite these risks, it still happens too often.
Minnie now joins the ranks of other "Craigslist victims;" and, once again, animal rescue advocates have to pick up the pieces of irresponsible pet owners.
Here she is at her latest feeding. Way more alert and keeping her head up for a good long while. Lookin around checking out her surroundings. It is progress for sure.
Minnie is still critical and has a long way to go to fully recover. Funds are desperately needed towards that end.
