Last year while on a tour of San Luis Obispo County, I discovered just how dog friendly San Luis Obispo is. It seems that establishments throughout the city open their doors to welcome our furry canine friends. At that time I did not experience the dog friendliness of the hotels. Recently I returned to San Luis Obispo with my two Saluki girls, Zoe and Lexi. We had the opportunity to stay at the very dog-friendly Holiday Inn Express.
The hotel is very modern and the public areas both interior and exterior were renovated about a year ago in a contemporary craftsman style. The rooms at the Holiday Inn are nicely appointed, comfortably spacious and clean. Each room was remodeled in the last 3 -5 years and will undergo additional upgrades some time this year. Ours included a microwave, refrigerator and Wi-Fi. I do have to say the speed of the Wi-Fi was fast compared to other hotels I have stayed at lately, where you could barely upload or download anything. A breakfast buffet is included with your stay.
The staff at the hotel is very gracious and anxious to accommodate any requests. In my case I needed extra blankets and they were at the room in the blink of an eye. You can expect a friendly call to your room within a half hour of your check in to insure that you are situated nicely.
The grounds are kept up and there is plenty of space with grass and shrubbery to walk dogs both on the property and off site.
Even though you are on a busy street, due to the hotels location at the northern end of San Luis Obispo very close to Cal Poly, you almost feel as if you are in a more residential area.
Upon arrival the dogs were treated to a water bowl filled with special goodies including cookies from Tails Pet Boutique, which you would have thought were for human consumption by the smell and the frosting. My girls were ready to immediately indulge. Also in this care package was a toy, a jerky treat and a chewy. The later came in handy when we had to leave them in the car while we were at dinner.
Zoe and Lexi love to travel with us and their favorite pastime at most hotels is making themselves at home on or I should say in the pillows. The more pillows the better. Typically when they enter the room they make a beeline to the bed. If there is a comfy bed with a group of pillows, you know they will be enjoying their stay, being the bed hogs they love to be. Our stay in San Luis Obispo was no different. In fact when we received the extra quilt, I think the dogs decided this was just another big pillow for them to lounge on.
By Zoe and Lexi’s point of view the Holiday Inn Express rated a-one in pillow satisfaction. In my opinion the hotel rates highly and is one I would not hesitate to return to with or without my dogs.
