A female German Shepherd mix is resting after having surgery to remove a choker collar that was discovered embedded into her neck. The dog was found wondering around alone and afraid near a pond in Ohio, as reported by Fox 8 in Cleveland on Dec. 12.
The Portage County APL was called to pick up the pooch to get her some shelter and medical care. Humane Officer Kathy Cordaro helped to lure the scared dog using hot dogs and this is when they made the horrid discovery. The collar she had on was under her armpit and about 12 of the 18-inches of it had grown into her neck causing obvious pain for her.
Humane Officer Kathy Cordaro explained that at the time, they didn't know she was as wounded as she turned out to be as they got her out of the freezing temperatures. It seems that the dog, that they now call Noel, had either been abused and neglected or she somehow ran away from her owner and was roaming around lost.
“It definitely doesn’t grow in overnight for sure,” said Executive Director of APL Chalan Lowry. They have been trying to locate the owners but have not been very successful. They have no idea where she came from so for now, it all remains a mystery as to how she got there with wounds that severe. Noel seems to still be a little timid around people but before long, this sweet pooch will eventually learn to trust others to love and take care of her.
“We’ll just keep working with her and hopefully as her wounds heal, her spirit will heal and we can move forward and get her adopted,” Cordaro said.
Hopefully, Noel will find a forever home real soon just like she deserves.
