It is becoming the pet food recall from hell. Diamond Pet Foods, which announced a voluntary recall of one of its products over fears of Salmonella contamination in early April, has extended the recall for a second time.
This time, the Galston, S.C., company reports that eight brands of dog food are under scrutiny with regard to possible Salmonella contamination and that more than a dozen dog owners have become sick with salmonellosis.
According to an advisory at the Diamond Pet Foods website, the recall now includes the following pet food brands:
- Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover’s Soul
- Country Value
- Diamond Naturals
- Premium Edge
- Taste of the Wild
The brands have been distributed in 16 known states but may have reached other states through “pet food channels.”
The company provides a strategy for pet owners in possession of one of the listed product brands to determine whether it is affected by the recall:
If your production code has a 2 or 3 in the 9th or 10th position AND an ‘X’ in the 11th position, your product is affected by the recall. If the product you have does not include a 2 or 3 in the 9th or 10th position AND an ‘X’ in the 11th position, your product is not affected by the recall, and you can continue to feed it as usual. Although no outbreaks of salmonellosis have been reported among dogs, the website Ann Arbor.com cites an Associated Press report indicating that 14 people have been sickened by the bacterium in recent weeks. Lola Russell, a spokeswoman for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, is quoted as saying, "People who became ill, the thing that was common among them was that they had fed their pets Diamond Pet Foods.”
