Dog food for thought

Picking which food to feed your dog shouldn't be a very difficult task, but it does take more thought and consideration than you may realize.

-The first thing to consider when choosing a dog food brand is the history of the company. You should research online to see if the company has a history of contaminations or poisoning. If it does, you should steer clear of that company.

-The second thing to consider is nutrients vs. fillers. Your dog cannot easily digest the corn, wheat, and soy that are used for fillers in most dog foods. Some dogs are exceptionally allergic to these fillers and you will see them scratching more often or showing other signs of their allergy. Some examples of good fillers to look for are potatoes, oats, and rice.

-The third thing to consider are the additives. Animal fats are easier for your pets to digest as opposed to vegetable oil, mineral oil, and beef tallow. If possible, you should also avoid foods with chemical preservatives such as BHA, BHT, ethoxyquin, and propylene glycol.

Once you choose a food brand, it is recommended that you stick with the same type of food to not upset your pup's stomach. If after reading this you choose to switch your dog to a different brand of food, a slow transition would be best. Slowly add the new food in with his old food until you've completely made the transition.
