Chico, a 3 year-old Chihuahua from suburban Chicago, was nearly an owl snack. A great horned owl with a wing span of five feet grabbed the dog at 1:30 in the morning. Fortunately, Chico had two things going for him: he was tethered to his owner by a leash and he was wearing a winter jacket that acted as a sort of bullet-proof vest.
Owner, George Kalomiris played out a tug-of-war while at eye level with the hungry owl. With talons wrapped around him, Chico was dragged through the snow and slightly injured. Yelling and holding on, George managed to scare away the owl and free Chico from his near disaster.
Chico's medical examination determined that his jacket saved him from a near-lethal experience. He has a small puncture wound to show from his experience. He also is a candidate for the Veterinary Pet Insurance Company's Hambone Award for most unusual insurance claim of 2010.
