Dog fighting ring busted in Charlotte

The Charlotte Observer reported today that the CMPD has seized 27 dogs and arrested two men. The dog fighting ring involved was one of the largest operations that they have ever investigated.

The two arrests came after police got a call regarding a number of pit bulls in the backyard of a home on Carelock Circle in east Mecklenburg.

When the police came to the residence, they heard dogs barking behind a large privacy fence and saw a number of the dogs chained to spikes in the ground.

When animal control officers arrived on the scene, evidence "consistent with training dogs for the purpose of fighting" was found and police helicopters also noticed evidence of a dog fighting ring.

The officers surrounded the residence, obtained a search warrant and waited for the residents of the home to show up.

Arrested and charged with felony training of animals for dog fighting and baiting were Melvin Smith, age 46, and Lefonze Williams, age 42. They are being held in the Mecklenburg County Jail.
