When it comes to "howliday", today is a real stinker! April 8 is Dog Farting Awareness Day (DFAD). Eww - P.U!

Let's be frank. When it comes to embarrassing conditions, we all do it and so do our four-legged friends. Whether you call it passing gas, cutting the cheese, tooting, flatulence or farting, it's a stinky situation that affects us all from time-to-time whether we talk about it or not.

Dog Farts

It happens when you least expect it. You are enjoying a nice dinner, relaxing drink or watching television and all of a sudden, the room fills with an overwhelming, odoriferous stench! It wasn't you so where did it come from? Sure enough - Fido let another one rip and appears to have a little smirk on his face! And pet parents know those silent ones can be especially stinky! How is it possible a critter so cute smell so bad?

Fido Fart Facts & Tips

While it may be a bit uncomfortable to discuss, Dog Farting Awareness Day actually shines the spotlight on the issue. According to WebMD, the most common cause for dog farts is swallowing air while eating. Like humans, certain foods also can cause gas. Stinky farts can also be due to malabsorption syndrome. But when a sudden bout of gas is accompanied by loss of appetite, diarrhea and/or stomach discomfort, your pooch may need to seek immediate medical assistance.

Avoiding table scraps and feeding Fido a low-fiber or prescription diet may help. Special bowls that don't allow dogs to gulp food may also help. Talk to your vet about other products that may help with the stinky situation. And don't forget exercise!

Be sure to share your stinky stories with The Animal Rescue League of Iowa. And speaking of gas, there is also a National Pass Gas Day for humans! "Pass" it on!
