A young pit bull, who had been let out in her family's Attica, Ind., fenced backyard, died after someone shot her and left her to die, reported Tuesday's WLFI News.

The one-year-old dog, named "Bella," was discovered on Saturday afternoon, near death, by Inez Dewey's husband, who first noticed the trail of blood which ultimately led to his dying dog.

Though Bella was rushed to a veterinary clinic, the gunshot wound proved to be fatal.

Bella's family is devastated by the loss of their companion and they are pleading for answers as to who is behind the cruel deed, and why they did what they did.

Dewey told WLFI News:

"I just want to know why,

Who? Somebody out there please find out who did this to our dog.

Bella had no history of aggression - in fact, she was in training to become a diabetic alert dog for her guardian.
