If you have a superhero Spaniel, witchy Weimaraner, pirate Pomeranian or cowboy Chihuahua, bring them to Citrus Heights for a Howl-o-Ween bash and costume contest this Sunday. Sponsored by Trends-n-Treats, the bash also includes games, vendors and adoptable pets from local rescue groups.
The party will take place at the C-Bar-C Dog Park, which was created by members of the nonprofit group POOCH, or Pet Owners of Citrus Heights.
Kim Sparks of POOCH says the event includes “a Smooch-the-Pooch booth and bobbing for Howl-o-Weenies,” and promises a fun day for people and pets.
Sparks will be on hand with her Queensland Heeler and Corgi mix Gracie; cats Sassy and Izzy, the latter whom Sparks refers to as a “midget mountain lion with ADHD,” have chosen to stay home.
Dressed-up doggies will compete to win prize packages for first, second and third place in the costume contest.
Some of the vendors on hand will be Trends-n-Treats, Couture Canine Creations, Dog Pastries by Andrea, Origami Owl, Say What You Need To Say Signs, The Craft Bin, Thirty-One, Maddie's Boutique, Grace Adele, Scentsy, Damsel In Defense and Javita.
POOCH spends $3,500 each year on pet waste disposal bags, more commonly known as poop bags. The nonprofit petitioned for the creation of the dog park, rather than for a planned tennis court; the group paid for the initial fencing and is responsible for its park’s upkeep.
Currently divided into two sections, the park allows small dogs and large dogs to romp with others that are similar in size and style of playing. POOCH hopes to add a third section, so that medium-sized dogs have the same option.
POOCH asks regular dog park users to become “members”, and puts each members’ $15 yearly fee to help maintain the park. Family and business memberships are available as well.
Dogs coming to the bash must wear ID tags, be friendly, leashed and current on rabies and other vaccinations.
For their safety, puppies younger than four months or any dog that it not vaccinated are asked to stay home from the party.
