This week on Animal Cafe, we visit with Jacque Redford. Jacque has been successfully breeding dogs for over 30 years. She specializes in Rhodesian Ridgebacks but her advice is sound for all breeds of dogs (and cats also).
In this week's interview, Jacque discusses the importance of testing for genetic disease in dogs being considered to take part in a breeding program. Did you know that a dog can appear to be perfectly sound but still be capable of passing a genetic disease on to his or her puppies? Jacque explains how.
Jacque also explains how a breeder can maintain the standards for quality for her chosen breed and even help improve the standard. She discusses using the show ring and competing in performance trials as a method of qualifying a dog as a candidate for breeding. She also discusses the importance of the OFA (Orthopedic Foundation for Animals) as a central source of data collection for all inheritable diseases.
Please visit Animal Cafe to listen to the interview. And plan to join the Animal Cafe team in the chat cafe on Wednesday, March 16 at 9PM EST. Jacque will be on hand to answer your questions. We'll also be discussing Jacque's recommendations for caring for your new puppy at home.
