If you are a full-time resident or if you only live in Fort Myers during the winter months, here's the scoop on a couple of fun programs held at Dog Beach on Estero Boulevard just south of Lovers Key.
The Calusa Blueway Paddling Trail trips are available to those of you who want to kayak with your dog. Small dogs are allowed but none over one hundred pounds are permitted to join you in the kayaks.
What Dogs Need to Kayak
All dogs must have their human companions with them, a life vest (for their human), have their current vaccinations and be able to get along well with other dogs.
It's best to pre-register at least two days in advance to make sure your seat will be available at Lee County Parks Recreation or by calling Mary Beth at 239-229-0559. The cost for your dog to kayak with you is $40. It's best if you know for sure your dog can swim well. Just in case!
Kayak With Your Canine
At Dog Beach you can find a variety of programs that include your canine best friend: Let the experts help you with a combination of cardio, weight and obedience training to help you and your dog experience two hours of fun classes per week.
  • Fitness With Fido - On Tues and Thurs from Feb. 9th through March 4th, 2010, fitness and obedience experts will help you with a variety of cardio, weight training and fitness training to help bond you and your canine friend while giving you an exemplary workout one hour per week for a month at a time. This fitness program costs $144 for ages sixteen and older for one month of fun and fitness.  March 9th through April 1st is also available for man and his dog as long as you call to reserve your spots.
  • Kayaking with Fido - On Wednesdays from February through May, eighteen year olds and up can kayak with their favorite canine. The cost is $40 for each two-hour class which is held each Wednesday of the month.

Mandatory Evaluation for Everyone

Before any class has been signed up for, this mandatory evaluation must be completed on any day of the week. From 10:00 a.m. to 11 a.m., each evaluation costs $15 per person. To find out more about the program or to register, visit www.leeparks.org or call 239-533-7440.

Enjoy the outdoors in a kayak with your best friend. Bring a camera and if you capture a shot that shows off your dog in a great light, please share with us here at The Examiner!

What a GREAT Idea! I have been wanting to place my Golden Retriever in a Kayak to see would he would do. This would give me that chance.

Darnell, Just make sure your Golden Retriever weighs less than 100 lbs. I hope you have a blast and come back and leave a comment about it.
