On Thursday, Great Plains SPCA, in Merriam, Kan., announced the return of a male cockapoo named "Alfie," who was allegedly stolen from their facility last weekend.
The good news was first posted to the shelter's Facebook friends:
As of just minutes ago, Alfie is back in our care at our Lost Pet Center in Merriam, KS. We are excited to report that Alfie will be reunited with his family around 6:30pm today. Pictures of the awaited reunion to follow. You have all been so loyal in helping us to spread the word - it worked! Alfie is going home!
Last weekend, Alfie had been brought to the shelter's Lost Pet Center after a couple found him wandering in the vicinity of at 75th Street and Interstate 35; the dog had escaped from his home. Thanks to a microchip, the shelter was able to gather information about Alfie's owner.
Unfortunately, before the owner could be contacted to come to the Lost Pet Center, the people who brought him to the facility managed to hand him over to a family who was there trying to adopt a dog. The Great Plains SPCA had explained how the situation began:
Simultaneous to us helping the couple that found Alfie, another family (mom, dad, daughter about 7 or 8) came in interested in adopting. Our staff directed them to our Pet Adoption Center just two miles away. As they walked to their car, they saw Alfie out with his finder for a potty break. The family looking to adopt came back inside and indicated they wanted to adopt Alfie. Staff shared that he had been found as a stray and was not available as he was on a five-day-hold to give his owner's the opportunity to find him.
Alfie was ultimately handed off to the family who had inquired about adopting him because the family allegedly claimed that the shelter had given them permission to take the dog - since that day, efforts have been underway to get Alfie back to his rightful owners.
Yesterday afternoon, the Great Plains SPCA wrote:
Happy hearts! Alfie is back with his owner and soon on his way H-O-M-E!
Alfie's situation is yet another reminder for all pet owners of the importance of microchips when it comes to proving ownership...
