See, Damascus will no longer be a city
but will become a heap of ruins.
A violent civil war is ranging in Syria and the global community differs in whether or not to become involved. President Obama will seek authorization for U.S. military action.
Markell says, ""If one Israeli dies from chemicals coming from Syria, Israel is going to take the issue into her own hands, She would do some real destruction to the city of Damascus. Israel will send a huge message to the rest of the Islamic world [that] this is what happens when you mess with us."
Not all scholars agree. Dr. Charlie Dyer is a Bible professor at Moody Bible Institute. Dyer tells the Chicago Sun Times that “Isaiah 17 predicted the destruction of the city, along with the destruction of the northern kingdom of Israel…Damascus was captured by Assyrians in 732 BC and the northern kingdom of Israel fell when the capital city of Samarai was captured by the Assyrians in 722 BC.”
Dyer points out that 100 years later that Jeremiah predicted the destruction of Damascus. But Dyer says “His message was fulfilled when the city was captured by Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon.”
But some believe that the real target of aggression in the Middle East is the destruction of Israel.
Writing for the Christian Coalition, Eric Cox says, "The Bible tells us that a coalition of Arab nations, led by the Biblical Persia, the present day Iran, and assisted by Russia, will organize to come against Israel in the latter days. This Goliath coalition is already coalescing. Russia has been working for years with all of the Arab nations mentioned in this prophecy, arming them with modern weapons and training their military forces. And for what? There is no other answer except to attack and annihilate David, the tiny Jewish nation of Israel."
Cox quotes 1 Samuel 17:47
All those gathered here will know that it is not by sword or spear that the Lord saves; for the battle is the Lord’s, and he will give all of you into our hands.
From the Muslim perspective, Dr. Faheem Younus, an associate professor of medicine at the University of Maryland and a frequent lecturer about Islam says, "At this critical juncture, where some religious leaders have issued an all-out warning of World War III, quoting the Bible to support the “annihilation of Damascus” is like poking at an inflamed appendix; don’t manage it promptly and it may rupture, triggering a much larger regional war."
