With reports of the public New Year's kiss between Taylor Swift and One Direction's Harry Styles, the relationship between the two music superstars seems solid. But most people may not realize that Styles is only 18, four years younger than Swift. Four years difference may not seem like a lot in older age brackets, but in your early 20s, a four year age difference is huge!
On February 1, Styles will turn 19 years old, while Swift just turned 23 in December. Taylor is the age of someone who just graduated college, while Styles is the age of a recent high school graduate. A 23-year-old guy dating an 18 year-old girl doesn't seem like that much of a big deal, but when the gender is reversed, a 23-year-old girl dating an 18-year-old guy seems highly unusual.
Not only that, but Swift was dating another 18-year-old this past summer. Taylor had a short-lived romance with Conor Kennedy earlier this year who was also four years younger than her. Maybe Taylor is rebelling against some of the older guys who broke her heart like John Mayer and Jake Gyllenhaal.
According to a Cougar dating website, "cougars" are women who generally date men at least 8 to 10 years younger. But when you are in your early 20s, a four-year age difference could easily be viewed with the same magnitude since guys are notoriously less mature than girls of the same age in their teenage years.
Of course, many older women/younger men relationships last. It ultimately depends on the individual regarding how mature they are. We just hope that Taylor's odds of finding happiness are higher with a younger guy than compared with the older guys she has dated in the past.
