In the latest episode of "Parenthood" Drew and Amy are faced with the choice of what they are going to do when she becomes pregnant. On Jan. 10 Breitbart claims that NBC's show is promoting abortion because that is the decision that Amy made without Drew's consent, despite the fact that he wanted to keep the baby.
Critics are in an uproar over this because they feel that NBC is promoting abortion to unwed teen parents when that is likely not the case. The Catholic community is in upheaval because there was no sort of discussion about faith, alternative options, or why Drew only calls the baby 'it' if he wants to keep it. While it's true that this discussion didn't take place, it is a sad reality that many teens that get pregnant either keep the baby when they don't want it or they get an abortion because they feel those are the easiest options.
Critics are also not happy that Planned Parenthood got free promotion from the show because that is the clinic that Amy chose to go to to have her abortion. Again, this is most commonly because Planned Parenthood is the most widely known clinic to teens in every community. Many fans were upset over the free advertising for the clinic but they also feel that "Parenthood" did a good job of displaying the fact that the father really has no say in these situations and the aftermath (Drew's devastation) of something so permanent as abortion.
Overall, NBC is not likely claiming that abortion is the answer to teen pregnancy but that it is the most common choice, no matter how anyone feels about it.
