Does my dog have fleas?

If you have a dog or have ever owned one, you know the possibility of having a flea infestation.  So how do you combat fleas when they are so small, so quick and seemingly nearly invisible?  Well, there are a few hints that fleas have invaded your dog.

Fleas are like any other organism in the world, they need to consume food (energy) in order to survive; in their case, the food is blood.  Also like any other organism, the remains of the food must be discarded.  If you think your dog has fleas, look for flea dirt, or flea fecal matter.

Do this by stroking your dog in the opposite direction that the fur grows on your dogs back.  This will expose the skin so you can search for flea dirt.  If flea dirt is present you should see small specks of black “dirt”.

If or when you find flea dirt on your dog, just ask your vet about flea prevention and how to rid your dog and possibly your house of fleas.
