I for one, have been patiently awaiting the big screen adaptation of The Lone Ranger for years now. It seems the film has been through hell and back already, and still, nothing is certain except for the fact that Johnny Depp has signed on to be our favorite Indian side-kick Tonto.
There have been all kinds of rumors going around about who will be Tonto's Lone Ranger. Everyone from George Clooney to Brad Pitt (Johnny's choices) to Ryan Gosling (who was heard to be in talks about the part - tho' there might be some scheduling conflicts for Ryan, but if he was smart he'd choose the Lone Ranger over Logan’s Run).

I would have loved to see Brad Pitt as the Lone Ranger, and Johnny as Tonto--but that probably will never happen. Hey, a girl can dream can't she? Johnny Depp and Brad Pitt on screen at the same time?!! (OMG!) Maybe they figure too many women would spontaneously combust with the pair on the silver screen together...
And George Clooney would have made quite a pair with Johnny...couldn't you just see it? George is such a funny guy, as well as Johnny, so I think it'd be a match made in comedy heaven, but supposedly that's off the table too.
But what we DO know is that so far the script (what is done up to this point) is supposedly very funny.
Johnny has said about the script,
“What we’ve got so far screenplay-wise is really great, really funny.”
He has faith in the production and believes that they can achieve something amazing once they get the film on its feet. One of the biggest concerns the actor had about Tonto, was how he would be written. He doesn’t want to reinforce the stereotypes that have been portrayed throughout the years when it comes to Native Americans.
“I always felt Native Americans were badly portrayed in Hollywood films over the decades. It’s a real opportunity for me to give a salute to them. Tonto was a sidekick in all the Lone Ranger series. [This film] is a very different approach to that partnership. And a funny one I think.”
They still haven’t found our The Lone Ranger, but whoever they pick will have to have an amazing on screen presence, as well as good chemistry with Depp. Don't you think it would be hard to play the lead, when you’ve got someone like Johnny Depp sharing a scene with you?
