Being a role model is something she's had to ease her way into. As she explained, "I have a hard time with the word ‘role model,’ but I am slowly getting comfortable with it. I really want young girls of all ethnicities to have someone to look up to. I didn’t have that when I was growing up."
Over the years, Demi has been very open with the fans about the personal struggles, including her 2010 stay at a rehab center where she sought treatment for substance abuse, eating disorders, and self harm. As she explained. "It has been tough at times, but the fact that I chose to be honest with my fans has actually helped me because now there is accountability."
The "X Factor" judge hopes to use her story to inspire others. As she explained, "I want to be that inspiration for my fans; and in order to do that, I need to continue to work through my struggles. I want to be the best version of me I can be and show people that change is possible. You can get through tough times and come out the other side. It is a process but so worth it."
One person who admires Demi is her long-time friend, Selena Gomez. In an interview with i-D Magazine, Selena said that she was proud of her pal. ''I'm very proud of Demi and her being able to accept the challenges she went through, but also for staying a good role model to people who do struggle with the things that she's gone through," as Contactmusic reported on August 26.
