The Dodgers today announced that they have signed left-handed pitcher Paul Maholm to a one-year deal.
The 31-year old finished the 2013 season with a 10-11 record and a 4.41 ERA, and is a career 76-95 pitcher with a 4.28 ERA in nine seasons in the majors with the Pirates (2005-11), Cubs (2012) and Braves (2012-13).
Maholm's signing may also prove to be a sign that the Dodgers aren't quite sure if Josh Becket will be to go as the fifth started, after having surgery this off-season. In 2013, Becket went 0-5 with a 5.19 ERA, and hasn't looked good since 2011.
As of now, Kershaw, Greinke, Ryu and Haren are Los Angeles four starting pitchers with Maholm appearing set to be the fifth.
To make room for Maholm on the 40-man roster, the club placed left-handed pitcher Scott Elbert on the 60-day disabled list.
