Every day there is news about spending cuts from the Department of Defense. On many levels these are lauded as fat-cutting, waste-reducing measures meant to save taxpayer dollars; until those cuts affect children or hit close to home.
Fort Drum announced yesterday that they will be closing the Memorial Child Development Center due to the DOD’s civilian hiring freeze, a move that will affect 58 children and their families.
While the closure is said to be temporary, until there is sufficient funding from the DOD for the civilians in charge, the center will close Feb. 8, and stay closed until further notice.
The Memorial Child Development Center provides part-time daycare and services for children ages 2-3 and also hourly care for children aged six months to five years.
As published by Watertown’s 7News/Fox, there are 59 on-post openings for child care providers; none will be filled until the hiring freeze is over.
A letter, which was given to affected parents on Thursday, states that child care is mandated by the Army to be prioritized with full-time child care being number one, hourly child care being priority two and part-time child care being priority three. Read the complete letter here.
The Pentagon is set to eliminate all 46,000 of its temporary civilian workers in anticipation of budget cuts.
