Documentary on Tibet gaining in popularity

While the situation in Tibet remains tense with continued self-immolations as acts of protest in demanding freedom for Tibet from Chinese oppression and the return of His Holiness the Dalai Lama to Tibet an award winning documentary on the struggle of the Tibetan people for freedom has become more and more popular. Buddhists in Syracuse who have not yet seen this film, The Sun Behind the Clouds, are interested in news of availability of the film on the Internet.

Phayul.com has reported "Documentary on Tibet to premiere on national television." This award-winning documentary dealing with the Tibetan struggle for freedom will soon be shown for the first time on Indian national television. The Sun Behind the Clouds, has won multiple awards, including the Vaclav Havel Award, Prague, 2010, Silver Conch, Mumbai International Film Festival, 2010, and Best of Fest, Palm Springs International Film Festival, 2010. The film will be aired on NDTV India October 22 at 3 pm and October 23 at 1 pm.

In the aftermath of the popular uprisings of 2008 which spread across the Tibetan plateau, The Sun Behind the Clouds traces the Dalai Lama’s trials and tribulations over a dramatic year, which included the long ‘Return to Tibet’ march in India, the Beijing Olympics, and the breakdown of talks with China.

Tenzing Sonam and his partner, Ritu Sarin, who made the movie, have explored "the interplay between the personal and the historic, spirituality and politics, and the tension between the Dalai Lama’s efforts to find a peaceful resolution to the Tibet situation based on compromise and dialogue, and the impatience of a younger generation of Tibetans who are ready to take a more confrontational course."

The Chinese government has been trying unsuccessfully to ban this film from international viewing. The Sun Behind the Clouds is helping to keep the flames of discontent of the Tibetan Buddhists in dealing with oppression from the Chinese government alive. This film is an important reminder to China that the dramatic truth about what has been happening in Tibet will be remembered.
