While most Anime conventions are known for their amazing cosplay, Nan Desu Kan (NDK) 2013 was full of costumes from throughout the world of Anime. NDK is the premiere Anime convention in the rocky mountain region. Held annually in Denver, Colorado, NDK is three days of fun and celebration for fans of Anime and Japanese culture. What was surprising was the vast amount of “Doctor Who” costumes that were on display and items that were available to purchase. As “Doctor Who” is science fiction and not Anime, one would be amazed at how “Doctor Who” has been embraced and celebrated in the American Anime community.
While walking around the convention, you will notice a TARDIS here and there, and then you realize how many cosplay versions of The Doctor there truly are. From the Tenth and Eleventh incarnations to companions and fans, the intricate “Doctor Who” costuming only gains further detailing and imagination when in the hands of Anime fans.
In addition to the “Doctor Who” cosplay, the sheer amount of merchandise for sale was mind blowing. Available to purchase were t-shirts, TARDIS corsets by Generations of Art, themed buttons, bags, infant onsies and art. While “Doctor Who” has had some animated stories, and animated recreations, it is incredible that fans across genre lines would celebrate the beloved television show in such a passionate way.
