'Doctor Who' star Karen Gillan lands ABC pilot 'Selfie'

On Tuesday, February 18 TVLine posted the news that 'Doctor Who' star Karen Gillan has landed the lead role in the upcoming ABC comedy pilot "Selfie," about a young woman who is obsessed with social media until it takes over her life.

The series was created by Emily Kapnek, who also made the ABC series "Suburgatory," and will feature a twenty something girl named Eliza Dooley who is more obsessed with how much attention she gets on her social media accounts than in her real life. After Eliza is dumped by her boyfriend very publicly, she is the center of a viral video that makes her an instant star. Eliza then contacts a marketing expert to fix her reputation before it ruins her life.

Gillan is most well known for the role of Amelia Pond, a young scottish woman who is a companion for the eleventh Doctor Matt Smith on the long running British science fiction series "Doctor Who." The actress is also known for her trademark long, red hair. In addition to several other television roles, she will also appear as Nebula in Marvel's "Guardians of the Galaxy," which is expected to arrive in theaters this summer.

The pilot is one of the first television shows to focus entirely on social media and the concept of viral videos, although many have been used in other network shows. The role is also the first major American television role for Gillan, and she is expected to play the character without her Scottish accent.
