One of the most prominent members of the landmark sci-fi show "Doctor Who" is now longer with us. Elisabeth Sladen passed away on Tuesday after a battle with cancer, this according to the BBC.
Sladen's most famous role was that of Sarah Jane Smith on "Doctor Who" -- she joined back in 1973, and has appeared in both the show's revival overseas in Great Britain (where the show also originated) along with being in a show all about her own character's adventures (which last aired just on year ago).
In a statement, the series' lead writer Steven Moffat had this to say:
"Sarah Jane Smith was everybody’s hero when I was younger, and as brave and funny and brilliant as people only ever are in stories. Many years later, when I met the real Sarah-Jane — Lis Sladen herself — she was exactly as any child ever have wanted her to be."
Sladen is survived by her husband and daughter, and will be sorely missed.
