It's March, which means it's finally time for new "Doctor Who" episodes, and on Sunday, March 17, BBC America released an interview with Matt Smith previewing the Doctor's latest adventures with his newest companion, Clara Oswald, played by Jenna-Louise Coleman.
With a new "Doctor Who" companion comes a new TARDIS, walking onto which Smith compared to "the first day of school," admitting he had gotten very used to the old one. "But Michael Pickwoad has done a fabulous job," he added. "This one is more like a machine." Of course there is also the new companion, Clara, the Impossible Girl the Doctor has already lost twice (in "Asylum of the Daleks" and the latest Christmas special, "The Snowmen"), and it's the Doctor's search for her that will bring him to London in episode 6, "The Bells of Saint John." Of that episode, Smith said, "I loved shooting in London. There is something so brilliant about having the locations [such as Westminster Bridge, the Southbank and St. Paul's] there rather than just adding them in."
After the Doctor and Clara's adventure in London, they'll be heading to outer space and an alien market in "The Rings of Akhaten," which the actor described as "very 'Whoey'" and said included "50 to 60 prosthetic aliens." Next up for the Doctor and his latest companion is "Cold War," which takes them a Russian submarine in 1983 spiraling out of control with an alien on board and which Smith called "one of the best episodes of the series" (and left them "soggy, like drowned rats," during filming).
Beyond that, the show is going to be bringing in new and old enemies—including Ice Warrior and Cybermen—in a way that will "pay homage to the classic series…for the fans" and allow them to "have modernized some of the monsters for a whole new generation," he previewed. And, of course, it's all building up to the 50th anniversary in November.
"Doctor Who" season 7.5 premieres March 30 at 8 p.m. on BBC America. Check out the episode synopses for the first four of the second half of the season here. Which episode are you most looking forward to so far?
