With the Ant Man fiasco now behind them, Marvel has begun a search into who will lead their next upcoming Phase 3 tent-pole Doctor Strange. While the internet works itself into a tizzy over who will become the Sorcerer Supreme, Marvel has apparently created a shortlist for who they want for the movie.

As previously reported Scott Derrickson (Sinister, The Exorcism of Emily Rose) is attached to direct the picture. Word has come that both Tom Hardy (Bronson, The Dark Knight Rises) and Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock, Star Trek into Darkness) are the current front-runners for the role. There also exists an earlier report the Marvel and Johnny Depp (Pirates of the Caribbean, Edward Scissorhands) had at least discussed the possibility of him taking on the role.

The possibility of either man taking the role could be a long shot. Hardy, Cumberbatch and Depp are all waist deep in projects they've already put on their schedules. Hardy has upcoming movies like The Drop, Child 44 and Mad Max: Fury Road on top of several other upcoming projects. Cumberbatch is in the same boat as well with The Imitation Game, Magik, and Black Mass which also stars Depp. Finally, Johnny Depp eventually will need to be present to get Pirates of the Caribbean 5 off the ground on top of many other upcoming projects.

Either way, it is refreshing to see Marvel starting to get involved with this project, as it will probably be "officially" greenlit at Comic-Con this July. It has been a personal passion project for Marvel President Kevin Feige so here's hoping it gets off the ground.
