Doctor killed in office: Shot in medical examination room in California

Dr. Ronald Franklin Gilbert, 52, was shot and killed in his medical office by a 75-year-old retired barber according to Fox News on Jan. 28. Stanwood Fred Elkus of Lake Elsinore was arrested Monday afternoon after the incident and is being held on a $1 million bail, according to the county jail website. Elkus is accused of killing Dr. Gilbert of Huntington Beach in his exam room.

According to Kathy Lowe, Newport Beach police spokeswoman, police received several 911 calls regarding six or seven shots fired around 2:45 p.m. on Jan. 28 near Hoag Hospital. Police found Elkus and Gilbert in a second floor exam room. The doctor had been shot several times in the upper torso and was declared dead at the Newport Beach scene.

Neighbors told the Los Angeles Times that Elkus had been undergoing treatment for prostate problems. James Lord, a neighbor, said that he frequently saw Dr. Gilbert. Elkus is scheduled to appear Wednesday in court. Police have searched his home, but they would not say if they found anything. Gilbert was a married father of two and seems to have been the only target in the shooting according to Kathy Lowe.
