Doctor killed in office and suspect in police custody

A doctor was killed in his office Monday afternoon in Southern California. According to a Jan. 29 CBS report, the suspect is in custody.

Police received a call that six or seven shots were fired at a medical office hear Hoag Hospital in Newport Beach. Officers found Dr. Ronald Franklin Gilbert, 52, dead in an exam room. Gilbert suffered multiple gunshot wounds to the upper torso.

The suspect was found in the same room and was immediately taken into custody. It is unclear if he gunman knew the doctor or what his motives were. The shooting does not appear to be linked to any other crimes. No one else was injured. It has not been made known if there were any witnesses to the shooting.

Dr. Gilbert practiced at Orange Coast Urology, was a professor at UCI Medical School and was once chief of the urology department at the local hospital. Police do not yet have any leads as to why the doctor was killed in his office.
